Could your helmet use a bath? Is it a bit dingy, dirty, or still splattered with mud from that excellent trail ride last weekend? Never fear – cleaning your helmet is really very easy. In just a few simple steps you can return it to its shiny protective glory.

Wash your helmet with a mild soap and water. You can use a rag or sponge if you like to gently remove any dirt. And don’t forget to wash the straps – just rub a little mild soap into them and rinse with water. When your helmet is good and clean, set it aside in a safe place to air dry.

Do not run your helmet through the dishwasher, washing machine, or car wash. No power washers either. These can damage your helmet. Just wash it gently by hand. Your helmet protects your head, be nice to it.

Helmet Pads

Helmet pads can either be washed by hand or in the washing machine. Just remove them and use a mild soap and water. If you’re using a machine, you’ll want to use the gentle cycle with cold water. But don’t put them in the dryer! Once they’re clean, just lay the pads on a flat surface to air dry.

Storage Tips

Proper storage can help your helmet last longer. It’s best to store your helmet in a clean, dry place that’s out of direct sunlight where it won’t get knocked around or dropped. This helps preserve the integrity of the EPS foam.

You’ll also want to avoid exposing your helmet to chemicals like harsh cleaning agents, petroleum products, adhesives, paints, and bug sprays containing DEET. The chemicals in these substances can have an adverse effect on your helmet and potentially diminish its effectiveness.

Just like that, you helmet will be fresh and clean… And ready to get dirty all over again. Huzzah!
