A bicycle helmet is an important part of every ride, and one that doesn’t fit properly won’t protect you as well as it should. We’ve got the steps here to help you find out how to find the correct helmet size, and how to adjust the fit.

First, you’ll want to find the right size. Start by measuring the circumference of your head by wrapping a cloth tape measure around your head one inch above your eyebrows. You could use a string and a ruler for this as well. Then compare this measurement to our Schwinn Helmet Size Chart to find the right size helmet for you. This is a good general size chart but be sure to check out product details for helmet-specific sizing. And if you’re in between sizes, you’ll want to size up.

Once you’ve found the correct size, make sure it fits correctly.

Place the helmet squarely on your head so that the front of the helmet sits one finger-width above your eyebrows.

Next, use the rear dial to find a snug fit – right to tighten, left to loosen. You should be able to shake your head without the helmet slipping off, while still feeling comfortable.

Now you’re ready for the straps. Adjust the side clasps to hit just below your ears, forming a “V” shape. Then buckle the chin strap and tighten so that no more than one finger fits under the strap.

If you’re buying a helmet for your child, it’s the same procedure: measure and compare to the size guide, adjust the dial fit, and adjust the straps.
